烧烤 (shao kao) - Chinese BBQ

Chinese food (expecially food here in Hunan) is simply to die for! They sure kno how to make things taste good! One of my favourite kind of food here in China is shao kao. This is their version of BBQ and man is it delicious. Chinese people will gather with family or friends and have their own shao kao in a park on a Saturday afternoon, but you can also find many streets that have outdoor shao kao restaurants serving everyones favourites almost anywhere. Many weekends (or even week nights) we will take a walk down the road and sit at our usual outdoor restaurant to enjoy some beer and BBQ. We  loved the food so much that a few weeks ago, we decided to try our hand at having a BBQ and headed to the park next to our school with some Chinese English teachers and made our own BBQ food.

So BBQ..you are probably thinking burgers, hot dogs, steak, potatoes..those sort of things. Well in China, BBQ is much different. A lot healthier and to be honest I think it's much tastier as well. Chinese people will take many different kinds of vegetables and cut them up, put them on skewers and douse them with various seasoning to grill up. For meat, they grill skewers of beef or pork. If you feel like chicken, you can very easily find a full chicken leg! Have an inkling for fish? Well the Chinese take the entire fish and plop it on the grill...simply delicious! My absolute favourite shou kou dish would have to  be que zi (eggplant). They put the whole eggplant on the grill and wait for the inside to become soft. They then slice it in half and open it up and add lots of garlic and chive and other seasoning making for a savoury and delicious treat! Shao kao is a great way to relax outdoors and enjoy a delicious meal..a great substitute for a North American style BBQ!

mmmmm quezi!
